GRAMMY®-nominated saxophonist and composer Melissa Aldana has emerged as one of the defining tenor saxophone voices of her generation. Born in Santiago, Chile, and now based in New York, Aldana first captured the jazz world’s attention when she became the first female instrumentalist and first South American to win the prestigious Thelonious Monk International Jazz Saxophone Competition. Since then, her deeply personal approach to composition and improvisation has established her as one of contemporary jazz’s most compelling artists, earning widespread acclaim for her Blue Note recordings 12 Stars and Echoes of the Inner Prophet.
Drawing inspiration from masters including Sonny Rollins, Wayne Shorter, and Mark Turner while forging an unmistakably original voice, Aldana creates music that is lyrical, adventurous, and emotionally resonant. Her quintet performances balance fearless improvisation with thoughtful storytelling, revealing an artist equally committed to tradition and discovery. At the Century Room, audiences will experience the intimacy, nuance, and expressive depth that have made Aldana one of today’s most respected bandleaders, a rare opportunity to hear a major voice in modern jazz in one of the country’s premier listening rooms.
